¿WHAT IS.....?
THE BABY WITH ANIRIDIA
HOW CAN WE HELP HIM?

(*) By Lic. Yolanda Penerini (visual stimuli), whom we greatly appreciate their help and contribution to improve this page.

1) During his early life by providing him softly-lit environments so that he dares to open his eyes.

2) Helping him to block the Nystagmus, looking at his eyes and talking to him closely. Due to his general underdevelopment, he cannot support his head, so he is not ready to stand by his own and fix the Nystagmus.

3) To attract him to soft-texture toys and toys of high color contrast (white-black, yellow-black, brown-yellow, etc.). Preferably straight outlines will benefit the development of the nerve cells nets that codify the vision.

4) Each time you approach the child, make him know all positive characteristics he has, while you caress him, tell him about the nice hands he has, his ears, hair, etc! The pair parts of the body: one ear and the other, one arm and the other, a foot and the other foot, so that he can meet with his body during such period in which he will not be able to look at the mirror or recognize himself.

5) Protecting him with peaked caps and contact lenses (in some cases glasses) with filters when he will go outdoors.

6) Taking him to the park, look for shady spaces so that, even when his eyes are closed, he can perceive some natural stimulus as the shadow and the light of the branches and leaves of trees.

7) At home, moving him from one room to the other to perform different activities, ensuring that the light source must be always projected against the child īs back (e.i., windows)

There are many opportunities for children with this condition. Many young individuals and adults have been able to lead a success life thank to the unconditional support of their families, they have attended higher education, worked independently or under an employment contract and lead a life that in most cases has exceeded all frightening initial expectations.
